Facebook Revamps Messaging

As expected, Facebook has announced it’s going to roll out a new messaging system; an email/SMS/chat/ hybrid. But the founder and CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg says it’s not an email killer, but a “modern messaging system” that brings together text messaging, chat and Facebook messages and he doesn’t expect users to ditch their traditional email systems.

The new messaging system will include an “@facebook.com” email address. As it is based on instant messaging rather than the more “formal” email, then if you’re online and logged into Facebook, messages will immediately show up in chat, while if you’re mobile, messages will move to your phone.

The system will use friend lists to prioritise your messages. Another folder will house less personal messages such as newsletters or bills, while a third folder will essentially act as a junk mail folder. Users will be able to add people to Facebook messaging even if they aren’t signed up to the site, and demote Facebook friends to a lower ranked folder if they don’t really want to see their messages.

Users won’t necessarily need a Facebook email account to use the system. The new messaging system will roll out over the next few months, on an invite-only basis to start with.

Is Facebook Planning to kill Gmail

I have been discussing recently that if there’s any company that can challenge Google’s supremacy over the web, it’s Facebook. Well, the critics of this opinion might get some answers now as Facebook is possibly looking to kill Gmail with its secret Project Titan. Rumours are rife that Facebook is going to not only revamp its messages feature, but will also launch a complete web based email client with a personal @facebook.com email address for its users.

Facebook Groups

There was one thing I believed missing in the Facebook, as Mark Zuckerberg rightly pointed out while talking to the BBC, “There are some things you are comfortable saying to all your friends at once but a lot of things you only want to share with your close co-workers or your family and there just hasn’t been a great way to do that until now.” (more…)

Facebook and its co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg have been criticised heavily on privacy issues with the largest social networking website. Facebook Adds Location-Based Features Called ‘Places’

Location-based social networks like Foursquare and Gowalla have been around for a while now and we knew it was just a matter of time before Facebook, the biggest social network, joined the club with location-based services.

As expected, Facebook has finally joined the rest of the social media world by announcing “Places,” a feature that lets users “check in” to a geographical location and broadcast that info to friends.

So far most of us know that popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can only be used to share text based status updates or tweets. But Mashable has a list of online resources that let you share your audio messages via Facebook and Twitter (more…)

If you’re anything like me and are fed up of looking at cluttered Facebook and Twitter pages with status updates and shared links which you can’t really control, then you’re going to love this new iPad app which is meant to be the “world’s first social magazine”. Flipboard, a start-up that is unveiling its iPad app today, builds a personalised magazine full of updates, photos and articles shared by your friends or by people you choose to follow you on Twitter and Facebook. The company is planning to incorporate material from other sources, such as Flickr, Foursquare, Yelp and perhaps e-mail messages and attachments very soon. (more…)

With more and more gadgets, devices and day-to-day utilities turning ‘online’, I wonder what would be the meaning of ‘offline’ in say, the year 2020? American carmaker Ford’s engineers are testing a Ford Fiesta AJ car for exploring the boundaries of what’s possible when an automobile is connected to the Internet and all of its associated services.
