Ink and paper will forever be a staple in any workspace with a computer. You can’t avoid it, nor can you ignore it – they’re essential items in both businesses and homes, but they don’t come cheap. Printer ink has been deemed to be worth more, weight for weight, than gold! However, there are several ways in which you can save pennies just by following a few simple rules.
1. Don’t print more than is necessary
If you print less, it’ll cost you less. Do you really need to print out that e-mail? Could you have just read that report on-screen? Most print options give you a choice of fitting multiple pages onto one sheet, which minimises the amount of ink and paper you use. Try to limit how often you print as well – if you print everything you need in one go, the printer only needs to boot up once as well and you’ll save on your energy costs.
2. Double-side your printing
Use both sides of the paper. Some printers provide this option for you – it’s known as ‘duplexing’. If your printer lacks the ability to duplex, it’s easy to do this process manually by turning and re-inserting the paper. You’ll instantly halve the amount of paper you use.
You can also use this method to recycle paper. When you’ve finished with a printout that wasn’t particularly important, pop it back in the printer and make use of the clean side.
Instead of using brand name paper, you could use photo printer paper from other suppliers, such as our own economical Photo Brite Paper.
3. Monochrome Printing
Black ink costs less than coloured, so print in greyscale where you can. Some printers use a small amount of coloured ink to make the greys, but it is considerably less than with full colour printing. Alternatively, try using a draft print mode. Draft prints use up to 50% less ink and have the added bonus of printing faster, which is useful if you’re in a hurry.
4. Change your font and page layout
Studies by a Dutch printing company have found that ‘serif’ fonts, such as Century Gothic and Times New Roman, use up to 30% less ink or toner than Arial and Sans Serif. Reducing the font size by a couple of points or avoiding fancy text editing, such as bolding and underlining, will also reduce the level of ink used. Another tip is to narrow your margins, which fits more text onto a page meaning you’ll print less pages overall.
5. Buy recycled/compatible inks and toners
Lastly, the easiest way you can instantly save a lot of money is by purchasing recycled original inks and toners. You’ll get the same quality as an original cartridge, but at a much lower price!
