I have been discussing recently that if there’s any company that can challenge Google’s supremacy over the web, it’s Facebook. Well, the critics of this opinion might get some answers now as Facebook is possibly looking to kill Gmail with its secret Project Titan. Rumours are rife that Facebook is going to not only revamp its messages feature, but will also launch a complete web based email client with a personal @facebook.com email address for its users.

Voice recognition software applications have been around for years now and voice commands are a ubiquitous feature in mobile phones. However, these applications typically just recognise the human voice and not the emotions in the voice to completely comprehend what the words coming out of a person’s mouth “really” mean.
Researchers from Spain’s Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Polytechnic University of Madrid) are developing a software application that allows computers to accurately recognise human emotions based on automated voice analysis. (more…)

The latest release from Apple is ‘Ping’: “a social network for music”.
Yes you’ll be glad to hear it’s not another iPhone 4 post. This time it’s someting that we can more or less all enjoy. It’s a bit like iTunes, but with the added juicy-ness of the celebrity twitter world. You will now be able to follow your favourite artists and see what music they’re listening to, whilst also keeping up to date with your friends. (more…)

We knew it was coming, didn’t we? The Japanese mobile phone and electronics manufacturer, Sharp, is going to launch a couple of glasses-free 3D mobile phones running Android 2.2 on top of a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.
Dubbed as Galapagos 003SH and 005SH, both handsets sport a 3.8-inch 3D-capable display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution. The 005SH features a full QWERTY keyboard and an 8-megapixel camera while 003SH has a 9.6 megapixel camera capable of recording 720p video but no full QWERTY keyboard. (more…)

Wouldn’t it just be the epitome of technology if we could control the gadgets around by just thinking? Where no physical exertion was required, only the process of thought. No typing, no clicking, no dragging, no touching. That’s right, I’m talking about controlling whatever we wished with just our mere simple thoughts. Sure, we’d become even lazier than we are now, but isn’t it what we’ve always dreamed of?
A recent study has shown that it is now possible for humans to “manipulate complex visual images on a computer screen using only the mind”. (more…)

While attending a music festival or a football match at Wembley, you must have noticed that it’s almost impossible to get a connection on a mobile network. This problem reveals the present hurdles in the modern communication as networks are not strong enough to cater to a crowd of nearly a hundred thousand. While companies are trying their utmost to resolve this issue with advanced hardware, the desire to find alternate solutions is getting stronger.
The problem of having a big crowd can turn out to be a blessing with the new system, which allows members of the public carrying wearable sensors to form the backbone of new mobile Internet networks, being developed by researchers at Queen’s University Belfast. (more…)

Back in August, Microsoft announced the shipping date and prices for Mac Office 2011 and as promised, they made it available yesterday.
The update to the Microsoft’s flagship product and most popular productivity suite includes a number of major additions, including the return of Visual Basic scripting, the replacement of Entourage with a Mac version of Outlook, and integration with Microsoft’s online collaboration tools.
Office 2011 for Mac is available to purchase from Apple, Amazon, or directly from Microsoft. If you’re happy with Word, Excel and Powerpoint, you can go for Home & Student version that has a retail price of £109.95 for three licenses, and if you want Outlook also, Home & Business version is available for £189.95.

I always wondered why can’t we have P2P connection through Wi-Fi as I really wanted to connect my laptop with my phone or with my brother’s phone. Though Bluetooth has been around for years now, its range is limiting especially if you’re working in your garage and want to access something on your laptop from your phone. Finally, Wi-Fi Alliance listened to the demand of my heart and has introduced Wi-Fi Direct and have started certifying several new laptop components. As many of you might be wondering its possible uses, I believe the possibilities are endless. (more…)

Last month we told you about a humanoid robot iCub that could teach itself to use a bow and arrow. The use of artificial intelligence in robots is not something very new but a robot that can read your mind to perform certain actions and train itself is a novel idea.
A team of researchers at the Neural Systems Laboratory, University of Washington, lead by Dr Rajesh Rao is aiming “to take brain-computer interface (BCI) technology to the next level by attempting to teach robots new skills directly via brain signals.”

Back in April we were sad to bid farewell to the Floppy Disk as the optical disks killed the old magnetic diskettes. Well it seems that history is going to repeat itself with probably USB flash drives now killing optical disks. While CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays are here to stay for a while at least, it’s been ages since I last used an optical disk in my notebook. (more…)
