The latest release from Apple is ‘Ping’: “a social network for music”.
Yes you’ll be glad to hear it’s not another iPhone 4 post. This time it’s someting that we can more or less all enjoy. It’s a bit like iTunes, but with the added juicy-ness of the celebrity twitter world. You will now be able to follow your favourite artists and see what music they’re listening to, whilst also keeping up to date with your friends. (more…)

There was one thing I believed missing in the Facebook, as Mark Zuckerberg rightly pointed out while talking to the BBC, “There are some things you are comfortable saying to all your friends at once but a lot of things you only want to share with your close co-workers or your family and there just hasn’t been a great way to do that until now.” (more…)

Location-based social networks like Foursquare and Gowalla have been around for a while now and we knew it was just a matter of time before Facebook, the biggest social network, joined the club with location-based services.
As expected, Facebook has finally joined the rest of the social media world by announcing “Places,” a feature that lets users “check in” to a geographical location and broadcast that info to friends.

Just as the talks about Facebook’s privacy issues seemed to have died down a little, a Canadian security researcher Ron Bowes has sparked a debate and revived the hype surrounding this social networking site. He did this by releasing 100 million Facebook users’ data on to the popular BitTorrent search engine, Pirate Bay.

- Nothing is “official” till it’s on Facebook. Events, birthdays, relationships – you name it, it’s got to be on Facebook before it is considered as fact.
- It’s too addictive and provides a great form of procrastination. Everyone has to check it at least once a day; whether it’s first thing in the morning, last thing at night, your lunch break, during work, at a train station, in a meeting (or all of the above).
- Clicking refresh on your home page every 30 seconds out of pure boredom – just waiting for something interesting to pop up.
- Everyone’s got at least 1 friend who is unhealthily addicted to Farmville (if it’s not yourself) and you in turn get the constant updates of how they have just harvested Goat Milk whilst working on their farm in Farmville. Oh please…
- When you find out information that you would rather have not known, whether it be certain photos, relationship change etc. And you know that it’s the thruth, because whatever Facebook displays is fact (refer back to Point 1).
- People updating their status’ every 5 minutes. No one really cares what trick your dog has just done, or what you’ve just had for breakfast.
- When people reveal ‘real’ emotion over facebook e.g. how much they hate/love someone. The worst kind is when an argument begins and all you see are sarky comments between the two parties. Then it gets to an all time low when someone else gets involved and joins in the rant and then the instigators hit back, claiming they shouldn’t get involved, it’s none of their business. WELL DON’T PUT IT ON FACEBOOK THEN!
- Tagging – it’s a chore but someone has to do it.
- The fact that you’re friends with loads of people you would never say ‘Hi’ to on the street. And then when you do see them on the street, it just gets all the more awkward as you know you’re both Facebook friends, but neither of you know or like each other that much to speak .
- Facebook chat – it never works.
Although these are the points that annoy me wholeheartedly about Facebook, I simultaneously love it for these reasons as well.
