Kobundo, a Japanese-based printing company, has recently unveiled its new ‘trick print’ technique. The technique involves mixing regular CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black, K being chosen because B was already in use for blue) inks with RGB inks that illuminate under UV light. Furthermore, the image can be printed in one pass, rather than overlaying the differing ink types as was previously used. A regular wide format eight-colour inkjet printer is used, with the RGB ink placed in the spare ink cartridge slots and specialised software used to combine the inks.

Blacklight ‘Trick Print’; transforming a greyscale image into a coloured one

The technique creates some interesting effects, such as revealing hidden details, colour changes or magically transforming a greyscale image into a coloured one under blacklight.

“Rather than people just saying ‘It glows’, we want people to be more surprised and say ‘It’s beautiful!’” states Keizo Ohashi of Kobundo when asked about the method (Akihabara, 2011).

Ink and paper will forever be a staple in any workspace with a computer. You can’t avoid it, nor can you ignore it – they’re essential items in both businesses and homes, but they don’t come cheap. Printer ink has been deemed to be worth more, weight for weight, than gold! However, there are several ways in which you can save pennies just by following a few simple rules.

5 Ways You Can Spend Less With Your Printing

1. Don’t print more than is necessary

If you print less, it’ll cost you less. Do you really need to print out that e-mail? Could you have just read that report on-screen? Most print options give you a choice of fitting multiple pages onto one sheet, which minimises the amount of ink and paper you use. Try to limit how often you print as well – if you print everything you need in one go, the printer only needs to boot up once as well and you’ll save on your energy costs.

2. Double-side your printing

Use both sides of the paper. Some printers provide this option for you – it’s known as ‘duplexing’. If your printer lacks the ability to duplex, it’s easy to do this process manually by turning and re-inserting the paper. You’ll instantly halve the amount of paper you use. (more…)

Anyone who has ever worked in a business knows that keeping costs down is vital. Consumables seem to drip through your hands like water though, and before you know it, you need to make another order again. Your printer ink cartridges and paper especially, can seem like a never ending but necessary expense that puts a dent in your monthly budget.

If you are getting slightly annoyed at paying out monthly for your printing supplies, then turn to online shopping. You can find some great bargains on the internet, and it’s only at the touch of your fingertips.

How to cut the costs on printing supplies?

Many offices these days fret over the money they spend on printing supplies, but it’s true that you can cut back by ordering your printing supplies online.

Whether you are shopping online or in the traditional way, we all want the best prices possible. The online retailers offer relatively low prices due to the fierce competition, plus you can shop around online extremely easily, comparing one retailer’s price to another’s. This shopping technique could literally save you hundreds of pounds.

Time flexibility

The most convenient feature that online printing supplies stores offer you is the flexibility of time. You can buy toners, inkjets, papers and other printing supplies any time from absolutely anywhere wherever an internet connection is available. Ever wondered what’s the difference between an inkjet and laser printer? How do you know what cartridges are compatible with your printer? What’s the difference between an original, recycled and compatible cartridge?

Well if any of these questions have passed through your mind, but you were too afraid to ask then fear not! We’ve spared you the shame of asking these questions out loud – you can read this informative post instead.

What is toner cartridge yield?

Yield is the amount of pages the cartridges is likely to produce at a standard 5% coverage. For example, if the cartridge description tells you that it has a page yield of 2,000 pages, then this means that that cartridge is likely to produce 2,000 pages at 5% coverage. Obviously if you are printing lots of photo then you would be printing at a higher % coverage, meaning your page yield is likely to decrease. The yield description advises you when buying your cartridge, so you know roughly how long that cartridge will last. (more…)
